Police flee after setting fire to a man covered in hand sanitiser with their tasers

The worrying incident occurred on October 30th at the Catskill Police Department. The man in the video, 29-year-old Jason Jones, died of his injuries after six weeks in a medically induced coma.

On Friday, NY AG Letitia James unsealed the terrible security tests as part of the investigation into his death.

The Tes show Jones interacting with three police officers in the station lobby and burning excitedly; the videos have no sound and the police have yet to reveal what he did there.

After about 18 minutes, Jones empties his pockets, takes off his top, and then tears off his shirt as he trudges through the lobby. However, he never dares to physically threaten the officers; For his part, officials seem patient with his increasingly bizarre behavior.

After 31 minutes, things take an even more bizarre turn when Jones picks up a large bottle of hand sanitizer and starts spraying himself with it. This appears to be the last straw for the officers as one pulls his taser out of its holster and aims at him while the other two surround and approach him. Jones pulls back, out of sight of the camera.

Then the officer fires. They move towards him, still out of view of the camera – when a sudden flash of lightning sends them all scurrying for their lives.

Jones stumbles back into the picture, completely engulfed in flames, as the spark from the taser has parentally ignited the alcohol in the hand sanitiser that is smeared on his skin.

While he beats the floor in agony and stands on fire for a full 20 seconds, officers try nothing to help and instead flee the room.

Jones desperately tries to put out the flames on his head, but he just seems to be distributing the fuel.

Finally – and only when the flames are completely extinguished – the officers run back to provide assistance.

Jones gets on his knees to ask the officers for help, but they only push him away. A fourth policeman who enters the scene returns the desperate man’s embrace. A stretcher is eventually driven up and he is handcuffed to the hospital.

Jones died on December 15th. After six weeks in a coma at the Clark Burn Center at SUNY Upstate Medical University Hospital in Syracuse, life support was withdrawn from him.

According to James, the Office of Special Investigation was forced to intervene, as is always the case when a police officer “could, by act or omission, have caused a person’s death”.

“According to the law, the officer can be on or off duty, and the deceased can be armed or unarmed. Also, the deceased may or may not be in custody or locked up, ”she said in a statement.

“If OSI’s assessment suggests that an officer caused the death, OSI will conduct a full investigation into the incident.”

The video was made available to the public “in order to increase transparency and to strengthen public confidence in these matters”.
