Girls Aloud singer Nadine Coyle has spoken openly about the importance of having a healthy relationship with food.

The singer revealed that she doesn’t want her daughter Anaíya to feel embarrassed about her eating habits and spoke about the pressure she herself has been under. Saying, “It’s so sad when food becomes the enemy. I’ve been through what you’re like, “I can’t put the jeans on” or “I’m going up a size” – or in some cases I’m going down a size for some reason – maybe stress”,

Speaking to journalist Prudence Wade, she said; “A good relationship with food is so important because we have to eat – there is no way around it.”

Continuing, said the Derry native; “I’ve never made food an issue – if Anaíya wants something, I don’t make it an issue. If she wanted something sweet – she loves her sweets, she would eat a whole pack of cookies if left to her own devices –

I say, ‘Yes, you can have another one, get another one, then ok, that’s enough. Because you don’t want to make yourself sick, and I don’t want to make you feel bad about wanting something unhealthy.’”

Nadine has also noticed a big difference between the food she ate when she was a child and what Anaíya, 6 years old, eats now.

The Promise singer grew up in Derry in the ’80s and noted that there wasn’t much variety in food back then. Explain: “I’m from a small town where there’s a lot of meat and vegetables – everything is farm fresh but there’s not a lot of variety in the foods.”

“A lot of food growing up wasn’t available. For example, I didn’t know what an avocado was. I don’t think you could find them in Derry or Donegal when I was growing up.”

Whereas Anaíya grows much more diverse. While Anaíya is adventurous and trying new foods, Nadine revealed that her daughter doesn’t like cheese, eggs or pork. Something the Last Singer Standing judge wouldn’t have gotten away with growing up with.

“If we couldn’t eat ham, eggs and cheese, we might have starved by lunchtime.”

Nadine also shared that she and Anaíya like to cook together. Sharing how being open to new foods helps Anaiya. She says, “She’ll try anything because she thinks it’s her recipe – which I find very, very helpful.”
