Brian Melo was born on August 15, 2007 in Hamilton, Ontario,
Canada. Melo grew up in East Hamilton where he attended
Cathedral High School and worked as a construction worker. He
worked as a construction worker up until he made it past the
Canadian Idol Season 5 auditions. Brian's background is
Portuguese, his family came from San Miguel, Acores, Portugal.
Melo’s parents are Mari and Augusto and he is the youngest of
four children, two older brothers and an older sister. He has
been a lead singer in his Hamilton based band ‘Stoked’ since
2003.
Brian Melo professionally trained
vocals at the Royans School for the Musical Performing Arts. In
1997 Melo sang back up as part of a choir for Shania Twain.
Brian Melo has previously tried out for Canadian Idol but failed
to make it through the auditions. At the 2007 Canadian Idol
auditions the judges praised Melo for his emotional performance
and his command on the stage. He received a standing ovation by
the audience and judges after his performance of Karma Police
by Radiohead in the Top 5 episode. Despite appearing the bottom
2 twice Melo managed to win the 5th season of
Canadian Idol on September 11, 2007. On September 13 he
released his first single “All I Ever Wanted”. Melo signed a
recording contract with Shane Carter and Neil Foster,
co-presidents of Song BMG Music Canada, his album is expected
for release later this year. Melo is currently touring Canada.
Brian Melo’s favourite song is ‘The
Show Must Go On’ by Queen. After winning Canadian Idol 2007 he
said “Now I know I can do anything I set my mind to” and he
lives by his motto “If you reach for the moon you’ll probably
hit the moon”. Brian’s favourite team is the Chicago Bears and
he likes chicken wings and the TV show ‘The Black Donnellys”.
Melo enjoys playing golf, football and soccer. Melo would like
to meet John Lennon.
